Level Up delivers a curated newsletter for leaders in tech. A project by https://patkua.com. Ideal for busy people such as Tech Leads, Engineering Managers, VPs of Engineering, CTOs and more.

In person contact is important
As more countries increase their vaccination rate I’m hearing from more and more leaders meeting with others “inperson” in the office after an extended period of remote working. Many sound relieved. Their reactions is completely understandable given so many people were into forced remote-working and had to build remote working habits along the way. I think another reason for this relief is that we all need a break in repetition and monotony. Humans appreciate and need novelty or something different every so often.
For those of you who are able to meet in person, it’s a great opportunity to remind yourself of what you can’t do as easily in a remote environment such as build and deepen personal relationships, get faster feedback and better navigate trickier conversations.
The effective leaders I’m talking are being more intentional about why and how they face-to-face time. When I ask for examples of many are using this for discovery and brainstorming - both of which require benefit from rapid information sharing, and fast feedback), for team or trust-building activities or building team agreements or consensus. These leaders are intentionally clear of not using face-to-face time for activities like project/status updates because they’ve built effective remote-friendly practices.
If you’re having some “in person” time this week, your challenge is to be more intentional about that time. Reflect on these three short questions:
  1. What is the advantage of doing this work from the office?
  2. Are we making the most of face-to-face time?
  3. Could we do this in a way that doesn’t require a meeting/synchronised time?
Enjoy this week’s newsletter and be sure to pass it on to a friend or colleague. Want to level up your technical leadership skills? Sign up for the online workshop, “Shortcut to Tech Leadership” or take a self-paced course at the http://techlead.academy.

Another significant anniversary with the 15th anniversary for EC2, one of the building blocks that made cloud computing popular.
Andy Jassy
Today is the 15 year anniversary of EC2. Offering developers compute for $0.10/hr was pretty radical back in 2006, it's now become the norm and backbone for so many new and existing businesses. And, the #AWS team isn't close to being done innovating on EC2. Lots more to come.
