Tougher times and what you can do about it
I can’t ignore what is happening in the Ukraine and neither should you. Some of you are directly experiencing it as events occur as I know it has a strong tech sector. Some of you, like me, will be indirectly impacted as we hear first-hand experiences via family, friends or colleagues directly experiencing it. I’ve seen some people express disbelieve or discount these events. If you are in this latter group, I encourage you to look at alternative sources from around the world. I find it difficult to ignore when numerous official sources (from different cultures, value sets, etc) are at least reporting the same events.
I encourage all of you to be extra careful sharing controversial articles on social media without looking up the sources. We are biased to react stronger to controversial opinions under stress and don’t always check to see if an article is based on fact or not.
Let’s talk about what you can do in a leadership position. If your business or teams are directly affected, I encourage you to read “Coping with a Crisis.” Look at the BICEPS model to understand how each individual on your team might be responding differently. Review stoic principles (control vs influence) and see what you can do in your environment to make decisions (control), or provide support (influence). As people in tech are well-paid relative to other sectors, one of the best things you can do is donate aid. I won’t direct you to a preferred one but there are many in every part of the world.
Stay safe out there 💙💛. If you enjoy this week’s newsletter, please pass it on to a friend or colleague who might benefit.

A message to PIs and others who have students and postdocs from 🇺🇦 and 🇷🇺 working in their teams. Check on them. Ask them how you can help. It'll matter to them more than you can imagine. I'm speaking from own experience of being a grad student in the 🇺🇸 1/4
