Level Up delivers a curated newsletter for leaders in tech. A project by https://patkua.com. Ideal for busy people such as Tech Leads, Engineering Managers, VPs of Engineering, CTOs and more.

Everyone is unique, including you, as a leader
This week I moderated a panel on the topic, “Building an engineering team that can withstand unexpected change” (the video will be made available shortly). There were some fantastic stories and experiences shared by all the panellists such as handling when a key person leaves the team, a sudden acquisition who does the same work that your team does or having to let go of people and do so in a humane way.
For me, it was a great reminder that every leader has a different journey. It’s okay if you’ve never had to deal with some situations other leaders have (it’s probably better in some cases!). It’s also okay if you handle a situation in a different manner from another leader - there’s rarely a right or wrong answer.
I know from my coaching clients, many leaders feel lonely. It’s hard to know if you’re doing a “good” job, or sometimes phrased, “doing something right.” Remember that each person is an individual, including you! You have different strengths, skills and experiences that shape your personal approach and your unique approach is okay. This doesn’t mean you can’t learn different tips from others or improve what you’re doing, but don’t fret about finding the “perfect” way to handle a situation. There is very rarely a “right way” of leading, particularly in uncertain times.
I hope you enjoy this week’s newsletter! Share it with a friend or colleague if you find it helpful, or drop me an email about topics you’d like to hear about in future editions.

In this virtual world, what are some awesome ways you can treat your team when you have budget leftover? I keep thinking ice cream deliveries, but we’ve done that. Accepting all *reasonable* ideas! 😛💜
