Managing Expectations
A key part of leading people is managing expectations. While the bad news is that you never get it perfect, the good news is that you can still positively influence this in some ways. In a conversation with a tech leader this week, we covered how to do this and I wanted to share a few tips:
  • See if from other perspectives - Practise empathy! Imagine what needs someone else has and imagine what they might expect from a task, meeting or other future event.
  • Ask others - If you have trust and access to others, why not be direct and ask others to share their expectations?
  • Share your expectations - When talking about future events, share your expectations in advance about what others should and also should *not* expect. Focus on information with high certainty and be cautious of sharing information that may significantly change.
  • Communicate, communicate, communicate - A lot about managing expectations comes back to the core leadership skill of communicating well. Just because you’ve said something, doesn’t mean it’s heard. Just because a message is heard, doesn’t mean it’s understood.
Your challenge for this week is to reflect on two situations - one where you felt you managed expectations well and one that went less well? What would you repeat? What would you try differently?
I hope you enjoy this week’s newsletter! Share it with a friend or colleague if you find it helpful, or drop me an email about topics you’d like to hear about in future editions.
