A week of giving and preparing talks
On top of the normal activities of the week I took part in two events. One was talking about “Scaling Architecture Decision Making”, the opening keynote for the Software Architecture Summit which was supposed to be in person in Berlin. Unsurprisingly this was moved to a remote format and unfortunately there is no video link to share.
On Friday I took part in the panel, “ Hiring and Managing Engineering Teams in a Post-COVID World” as hosted by the UK based CTO Craft Bytes series. I had the honour of sharing the panel with Head of Engineering at Farewill, Sally Lait (@sallylait) and Director of Engineering at Unity, Sarah Hale (@sarahjane_hale). It was hosted by CTO in residence at Impact Capital, Ezechi Britton (@EzechiBritton) so not your typical looking panel ☺️. You can see the replay here.
I’ve also finished a new keynote that I’ll be presenting for an internal conference called, “The Evolution of Engineering Excellence” which I’ve had a lot of fun preparing. It’s a nice reflection on how our industry has improved and evolved over the years and sharing some of the lessons we can use to handle the future. You can see a slide excerpt below tracing some of the paths that led us to Git. I’m thinking about writing a couple of articles on this, so send me an email if you’d like to read about it.
I hope you enjoy this week’s content. If you find it useful, please forward to someone else and send me feedback. Stay safe and healthy 🙏
Join the virtual 3-hour workshop, “Shortcut to Tech Leadership” on Sep 23, Oct 28 or Nov 18. Each course has a limited number of tickets (up to 30), so book now.

Good advice. Open this thread 🧵 to see a concrete example.

I continue to learn so much about good software architecture and design. This week is a reflection on how you have to design holistically, and if what you thought was right turns out wrong - don't hesitate. Just change tack.
I’m better every manager would love one of these. Click to watch this 🤯
