In the online workshop, Shortcut to Tech Leadership, we cover how leadership is what you do (an action), not necessarily what someone gives you (a title/role). I’ve run this workshop both publicly and privately and each workshop is normally full of white males. I’ve honestly struggled with what I can do to influence this more, so drop me an email if you have suggestions! One action I decided to take was to reach out to communities well-known for supporting diverse candidates. The result was a partnership with Women Who Code (Berlin) to host a dedicated course for their members, which I ran this week. It’s the first time I’ve ever run a course in my career with a cohort of women 🎉 (typically representation is max ~25%). I was really pleased to hear the excitement, the insights and I was encouraged by more women either in or seriously considering technical leadership roles. Just like all acts of leadership, it’s not about what you say, but what you do that often matters. Reflect on this week what actions you can take to support underrepresented people in your team or organisation.

7 Universal Principles that Explain the Persistent Problems of Leadership
Reading time: 4mins A short but fun article from Dan Rockwell (@LeadershipFreak) who offers 7 universal principles (which I would call traps). This list is useful for all leaders to review.

What Gets Visualized Gets Velocity
Reading time: 5mins I totally agree with this mantra shared by former CTO and entrepreneur Douglas Ferguson (@voltagectrl). In this article, he explains why visualisation is a great way to level up your communication and meetings. Some of the best leaders I have worked with use this mantra to communicate well and conduct effective meetings.

Reading time: 8mins If you’re looking to move into a technical leadership role, Shelby Hiter shares 5 important skill areas to focus on growing. While it’s tough to say if these are the most important, these skills are essential for leaders at all levels.

Amazon collaborates with Earth System Grid Federation to increase access to climate model dataset
Reading time: 7mins What an amazing initiative from Amazon to open up climate model data. Open source libraries and code accelerated the speed of development, and I’m hopeful that open datasets like this can help others work on powerful problems like climate science. This was also the first time I’ve learned about Amazon.Science ☺️

Software Architecture and Design InfoQ Trends Report
Reading time: 7mins In Issue #88 of LevelUp, I shared a couple of links showing trends in the industry from ThoughtWorks and The Software House. I find it’s healthy to draw on multiple perspectives (and not blindly follow one). I also enjoy the perspectives of the InfoQ editors (which IMO reflect a more “enterprise” crowd). Some interesting trends and definitely some new concepts for me too (like OAM) 🤓. More reading and learning to do.

How often do people actually copy and paste from Stack Overflow? Now we know
Reading time: 20mins I’m pretty sure if you were to identify critical dependencies most teams wouldn’t think of Stack Overflow. This entertaining article from Ben Popper and David Gibson share the result of a fun experiment, measuring how often people copy and paste from Stackoverflow. Imagine working today in tech without it 😰

Research Proves Your Brain Needs Breaks
Reading time: 8mins In a study of brain wave activity, researchers found back-to-back virtual meetings are stressful. But the research also points to a simple remedy—short breaks. This is why, as a leader/manager, you want to block out time without meetings.

The Dark Side Of OKRs (And Why We Should Care)
Reading time: 6mins I loved reading this article from Antoinette Weibel (@antoinetteprof) given how widely people use OKRs. It reminds me of how leaders and managers shouldn’t just focus on what tools or processes to use, but also be careful about how. She outlines some common pitfalls to avoid.

Spoken to quite a few colleagues at Google that say they'll quit if forced to go back to the office in September.
Many have moved to more remote areas, settled down, built or building new houses...
Will execs take the gamble? Will return-to-work policy be applied evenly?🤔
